A copy matters when you can recover it.
The verified Recovery Center 0.1.3 workflow: one folder, an encrypted archive and a trial restore. A guide to the private prototype.
Before making a copy
The test covers one home directory folder, up to 20 GiB and 100,000 entries. Choose files you can verify and an archive destination separate from the source. Scheduling, remote storage and consistent backups of open applications are not qualified yet.
- A copy on the same disk does not protect against disk failure.
- The lab does not demonstrate recovery after physical computer failure.
Create an encrypted archive
In Backup and restore, choose the archive folder and set a password. The prototype requires at least 12 characters. Recovery Center does not store this password: losing it may make recovery impossible. Keep it separately from the archive.
Wait for verification
Select the folder to protect and confirm the copy. Recovery Center confirms a copy only after an integrity check and a trial restore. If an operation fails or is interrupted, do not treat that copy as verified.
Check a recovery
The verified workflow restores a copy into a new folder without overwriting originals. Open recovered documents and check their contents. Lab tests compared contents and permissions of test files; they do not cover every format or application.
